Birthday Parties

I wonder when the shift happened that everyone decided a birthday party had to cost a fortune. I am guilty of spending too much myself. The kids are not going to be thrilled to realize that part of our anti-consumerism year includes cutting back or excluding extravagant parties. I'm not really looking forward to telling them.

I don't think you have to tell them. I did next to nothing for my 9-year-old's "High School Musical" party this year. She planned most of it herself and said it was the best birthday party ever. It made me realize that all the hard work I'd done in the past was really more for the other parents to ohhh and ahh over than for my child. Also, we are trying to do more "exprience" birthday gifts (like inviting a birthday friend with us to a museum for the day) it cuts down on all the junk gifts that the kids play with once and throw away. I like your blog--fun to read your insights.
